The Edward Said Chair of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia was created to honor Edward Said, a brilliant Palestinian scholar and outspoken advocate for justice, who taught there for years. The chair is focused on the study of the modern Arab world. Rashid Khalidi, another Palestinian, is a leading historian and expert on the Middle East and currently holds the position. His research on Palestinian history and U.S. foreign policy has made him a critical voice. The role reflects Columbia’s dedication to exploring important global issues and supporting bold, critical scholarship. Columbia University and Rashid Khalidi recognize the Bseiso family archive as a significant addition to its DLC library and curriculum. This rare collection is being introduced to its current roster and alumni of historians, professors, and graduate students.
